CB Interiors: Roger Jao’s New LA Home
In April 2017 we were approached by an old friend, Roger Jao of Survios, who had recently purchased a 4 bedroom home in an up-and-coming area of LA. After seeing our 33-foot wallpaper installation at Creative Recreation, he decided to use our design services.
All of our interior styling projects follow a similar process that allows us to methodically achieve the perfect space to exceed our client’s expectations.
STEP 1: Identifying the Client’s Style
Before any design project, we like to delve in and identify the core of our client’s style. After meeting with Roger, we were super inspired by his contemporary art collection, Taiwanese heritage, love of the desert (especially Joshua Tree), passion for electronic, hip-hop and soul music, career at a virtual reality company, fondness of LA sunsets, and desire for multi-functional pieces and couldn't wait to delve in.
STEP 2: Making a Design Board
Next, we like to create a design board to develop inspiration for our project; in Roger’s case, we found many images that matched his warm and contemporary style.
STEP 3: Staging a Walkthrough
Then, we visit the existing space and stage a walkthrough. This is a largely intuitive process-- the walkthrough allows us to immediately visualize where pieces are going to go and create a visual story for the space and what style of furniture and vibe would make sense.
STEP 4: Choosing a Color Palette
In choosing the paint palette for the home, we wanted the tones to be earthy, bold, and reflective of Roger’s eclectic personality. We wanted the art displayed in the home to reflect these same tones. Roger already had a vast contemporary art collection, so we carefully picked out and placed these existing pieces along with the new ones.
STEP 5: Picking New Pieces
